Not So Different: What You Really Want to Ask About Having a Disability by Shane Burcaw

For Young Children

Shane Burcaw is back!

Shane Burcaw was born with a rare disease called spinal muscular atrophy. This hasn’t stopped him from doing the things he enjoys – like being an AWESOME author.

I am so glad to read more about this awesome guy again. It’s nice that he’s reaching out to a younger audience. He couldn’t do that with his first book because it talked about some mature subjects.

In this book Shane answers his most asked questions. Personally, I would have preferred a book featuring his most ridiculous questions asked. He mentioned three questions in his memoir that had me falling down laughing. My favorite one was:

Q: “How did you get your disease?
A: I was bitten by someone who already had it.

One of the questions that was answered was “Why is your head bigger than the rest of your body?” This question reminded me of the first time I picked up Shane’s memoir and thought “This guy looks like a Tom Bergeron bobblehead.”

One thing I’d like to mention about Shane is that he wants to be on the Ellen show. In my opinion, Shane and Ellen would really hit it off because they are both hilarious. I could totally see them pranking other celebrities by hiding in the bathroom and scaring them. He made a video and wrote her a letter. See links below:

I really hope Ellen gets in touch with him.

And I have some great news! Shane is writing another memoir and it’s coming out this fall! I’ll be sure to review it as soon as possible.
